Setup a Windows 7 box

Guilhem Brouat
Hello there !

I have been struggling with this for hours now: I cannot get a working Windows guest with Vagrant 1.7.2 and Virtualbox 4.3.4.
Here is my Vagrantfile :

Vagrant.configure(2) do |config|

  config.vm.box = "vagrant-win7-ie8"
  config.vm.box_url = "http://aka.ms/vagrant-win7-ie8"
  config.vm.guest = :windows
  config.vm.communicator = "winrm"

  config.winrm.username = "IEUser"
  config.winrm.password = "Passw0rd!"

  config.vm.boot_timeout = 600

  config.vm.network :forwarded_port, guest: 5985, host: 5985, id: "winrm", auto_correct: true

  config.vm.provider "virtualbox" do |vb|
    # Display the VirtualBox GUI when booting the machine
    vb.gui = true

    vb.customize [ "modifyvm", :id, "--hwvirtex", "off" ]

    # Customize the amount of memory on the VM:
    vb.cpus = 1
    vb.memory = 1024
  end

  if Vagrant.has_plugin?("vagrant-proxyconf")
    if ENV["http_proxy"]
      config.proxy.http     = ENV["http_proxy"]
    end
    if ENV["https_proxy"]
      config.proxy.https    = ENV["https_proxy"]
    end

    config.proxy.no_proxy = "localhost,127.0.0.1"
  end

end

When I execute vagrant up the guest starts correctly and I end up on the desktop (since I set vb.gui to true). But vagrant still tells me "Waiting for machine to boot" and after a few minutes, it fails with timeout...

I tried to perform actions described here : https://gist.github.com/uchagani/48d25871e7f306f1f8af
Following these actions I tried to replace config.winrm.username and config.winrm.password with "vagrant".

Nothing works!

By the way, a Linux box works perfectly well on the same host.

Is there someone here who would be able to explain me, step by step, how to get this working?

Thanks in advance.

Just to say, I also tried to execute the two commands given at the end of this page : https://docs.vagrantup.com/v2/vagrantfile/winrm_settings.html
It did not help either...

+1. Would love to see these windows / modern.ie boxes working with
vagrant Winrm, too.

Cheers,
Torben

+1 I've been trying for hours to get one of these set up, so far no dice. I'm wondering if anyone's been able to do it, or if it requires modifying the VM image.

If you search the Issues list there is a bug with Windows guests. I would downgrade to Vagrant v1.6.5

Re: Setup a Windows 7 box

Tom Jacques
I finally figured out what's going on. I'm using the same machine as Guilhem Brouat was, the vagrant-win7-ie8 box. This box is not configured properly to be used by Vagrant, because the Modern.ie team released it before Windows was supported  (I think?). Their goal was just to have a VM that could be spun up with "vagrant up" and then interacted with manually. It isn't set up to be accessed via SSH or WinRM.

If you follow the steps here on the original box: https://gist.github.com/uchagani/48d25871e7f306f1f8af

Then repackage the box using

 vagrant package --output vagrant-win7-ie8-updated.box

Then add the new box using

vagrant box add vagrant-win7-ie8-updated vagrant-win7-ie8-updated.box

It will spin up properly as long as you have a good Vagrantfile.

For reference, here is my Vagrantfile:

# -*- mode: ruby -*-
# vi: set ft=ruby :

VAGRANTFILE_API_VERSION = "2"

Vagrant.configure(VAGRANTFILE_API_VERSION) do |config|

  config.vm.define "win7" do |win7|
    # http://blog.syntaxc4.net/post/2014/09/03/windows-boxes-for-vagrant-courtesy-of-modern-ie.aspx
    win7.vm.box = "vagrant-win7-ie8-updated"
    win7.vm.guest = :windows

    win7.vm.network :forwarded_port, guest: 3389, host: 3391
    win7.vm.network :forwarded_port, guest: 5985, host: 5987, id: "winrm", auto_correct: true

    win7.windows.set_work_network = true
    # Makes the host machine available as "192.168.50.1" on the guest
    win7.vm.network "private_network", ip: "192.168.50.2"

    # http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23574387/why-is-vagrant-trying-to-ssh-to-windows-guest
    # https://www.vagrantup.com/blog/feature-preview-vagrant-1-6-windows.html
    win7.vm.communicator = "winrm"

    win7.winrm.username = "IEUser"
    win7.winrm.password = "Passw0rd!"

    # We don't want the default headless mode
    win7.vm.provider "virtualbox" do |vb|
      vb.gui = true
    end
  end

What's still unfortunate is that there isn't a way to automate that process (except with something like Sikuli).

Or you just use the boxcutter/windows baseboxes (you can build them
with packer.io);

Re: Setup a Windows 7 box

Shawn McCarthy
This article last year mentions the modern.ie Virtualbox VMs should work with Vagrant : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/09/16/expanding-offers-and-vm-delivery-choices-on-modern-ie.aspx . Unless I misread something . I have never tried, but I was looking to start soon.

Thanks!

Or maybe you need to use the specific VMs listed here ? http://blog.syntaxc4.net/post/2014/09/03/windows-boxes-for-vagrant-courtesy-of-modern-ie.aspx

Just add that packer.io can be used to build your own boxes.

Since windows have the technical requirement of not sharing keys and
handling activations, you may end using your own boxes

Re: Setup a Windows 7 box

If you don't want to build a Windows box yourself, Tom's instructions should work well for "converting" the provided modern.ie VMs. Even the links provided in the blog posts above don't work correctly because they explicitly note that openssh isn't included and therefore provisioning "doesn't work".
